MSE (Mechanically Stabilized Earth) walls and RSS (Reinforced Soil Slope) offer significant advantages in terms of economy, ease of construction, and rapidity while causing minimal disturbances to traffic and other services. These factors make them highly favored retaining wall systems in civil engineering applications. Notably, only a few MSE structures have been built to heights exceeding 30 meters.<\/p>

One remarkable example is the reinforced soil structure at the Pakyong Airport in Sikkim, India, which stands at an impressive height of 74 meters. This project stands out as one of the largest geosynthetic megastructures ever built globally. The location within the challenging terrain of the Himalayas, coupled with heavy rainfall, weathered ground conditions, seismic activity, and land constraints, made this nine-year endeavor exceptionally difficult. Our reinforced soil structure played a crucial role as a retention embankment for the airport runway, a testament to its engineering prowess. This structure remains one of the world’s tallest reinforced soil structures and a symbol of achievement.<\/p>

Dr. Ratnakar Mahajan, our Regional Technical Manager for ISEAP (India, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific), will be delivering the technical presentation. Dr. Mahajan is an expert in the application of geosynthetics in geotechnical and hydraulic engineering. He holds a Ph.D. in Civil Engineering. He possesses extensive experience in soil reinforcement, geotechnical centrifuge modeling, instrumentation, earthquake analysis, ground improvement, retaining structures, slope stability, river training, channel lining, and rockfall protection. He has played a pivotal role in the development of new connectors for reinforced soil walls and leads the company’s R&D activities.<\/p>
